Choosing Your Groomsmen

What Does A Best Man Do?

The best man is most commonly known for holding the wedding rings during the ceremony and giving the first toast at the reception; however, his responsibilities don’t end there.

The best man also serves as organizer of the groom’s bachelor party (if there is to be one); witness on the marriage certificate; and distributor of vendor payments (labelled envelopes with pre-written checks).

If there is to be a joint gift from the groomsmen to the bride and groom, the best man collects the money and purchases the gift. Finally, the best man makes sure the ushers know the correct seating for guests (bride’s to the left, groom’s to the right), if there is no head usher assigned, and returns the groom’s rented wedding attire the day after the wedding.

Perhaps the most important responsibility of the best man is to keep the groom on time for the wedding. He should also do what he can to ensure that the groom’s day runs smoothly, from confirming transportation has arrived, to corralling the groomsmen and keeping them on schedule. And although is not an “official” duty, the best man is often expected to dance with the bridesmaids as well as with the bride at the reception.

What Does an Usher?
The main role of an usher is to greet and seat guests as they arrive at the ceremony. He’ll hand out programs, know in advance where reserved seating is, distribute guests (bride’s on the left, groom’s on the right), and assist late-arrivals so they can be seated as inconspicuously as possible. In addition to seating guests, ushers seat family members in the correct order right before the processional. Ushers also light the candles for a candlelit ceremony before guests arrive, and lay the aisle runner before the processional begins.

Decide who makes the cut
You should choose the male who is closest to you and has been there for you. Whether he's a blood relative or close friend, you'll be glad when your wedding day arrives that you picked your best friend.

Who Doesn't Make It
Its is advisable not to select friends or family members who get too drunk, who are late for everything, and who have a reputation for not showing up for important events as your groomsmen.

Choose your most responsible and trustworthy friends for your special day.
